Our Rotary Club recently supported the pupils of Arthur Terry School by making a donation towards the building of an electric racing car. The project encourages pupils to develop engineering skills, coupled with design technology and team building. Races are arranged with other schools and organisations on circuits around the country including Silverstone.
We have again supported this very worthwhile project and encourage to visit our Facebook page to see a range of photos.
I just thought I would take the opportunity to update you on the progress of the Greenpower team, and in particular on how we are using the funds so generously donated by the Rotary Club.
After our most successful season to date, both in competition and academically, as 20 of our students gained 45 vocational qualifications between them in Design, Manufacturing and Systems, we are now about to become the Midlands Centre of Excellence for Greenpower. This will allow our students the opportunity to mentor students from other schools who are just starting out in Greenpower. Our team has expanded further, we now have 37 students on the register, many of whom are among the most vulnerable in the school, Greenpower gives them a purpose and helps develop their self esteem and confidence. We are busy preparing our two cars ready for the start of the season in April and we have six students from the team who will start competing in the British Schools Karting Championship from later this month.
In terms of the funds you donated to us, we have bought a large quantity of fibreglass and carbon fibre to build the bodywork for the two cars, this will allow our students the opportunity to work with modern composite materials and will, therefore, give them additional strings to their bows when they come to interviews.
Once again, please feel free to call in to see us any time, the team always like to show our supporters around what they have been up to. Please also pass on our best wishes to all of the Rotary Club members.
Kind regards
